![]() ![]() The loads seem very accurate both on paper and thru the chrono. 360 so it still flies reasonably far and straight. Houston Has anyone been using trail boss to load subsonic or reduced velocity loads in what would be considered 'high velocity' rounds I have been working with 500S&W, 444 marlin, 44 mag and some other guns and gotten great results. Luckily, the BC of this chunk of lead at that speed is in the neighborhood of. With the Marine's 30 Whisper I had no problem getting sterling groups with a 210 grain Lyman #311284 at 1060 fps, but in standard 1-10" twist guns I start getting instability at less than 1400 fps with this bullet. I don't know how expert I am but I can offer this (apologetically) late observation about slow 30 cal cast loads. Trail boss will give a nice case fill, even when downloaded.Īndrew on here, is this site,s expert on cast bullets, he,s been at it all his life, maybe he will chime in. A lot of casters use 32wc/hbwc's in the 30cal's for small game/replacing the 22lrs. They do an excellent job in the 308's & 30-06's with 3.5gr to 5.0gr of bullseye. nothing more than a 98gr hbwc for the 32cal target pistols. More guns have been blown up by far, by detonation, than overpowered loads. Some of my favorite 30cal bullets that seem to hold their own at subsonic speeds. When you get down to tiny loads of blue dot etc you run the very real risk of the powder lying flat in the case, and the primer flashing across the whole surface area of the load in one go, and causing detonation, instead of progressive explosive Detonation blows guns up. I just started playing with Trail Boss in my 35 Whelen with 158 gr XTPs (I needed something to do while I waited for the 225 ABs to arrive). Have fun.Trail boss is a pretty failsafe powder to use in a subsonic load, as its virtually impossible to overload it.Be VERY carefull with ANY powder, DOWNLOADING it to subsonic levels. Through and through torso shots, accurate enough for head shots.Īnd search for "308 subsonic bullseye" while you're at it. They work well on deer, ME close to a 9mm round. I dont know about 30/30 but I load 7.62x54r with 115gr 32-20(. Fed through an LTR w/ a 20" barrel I occasionally get a sonic crack, especially with a warm barrel, which I attribute to not having the extra 4" of barrel slowing down the bullet. All I hear is trigger breaking and "thump." I've shot hundreds of 'em. Just want it to be able to knock over hares quietly for my dogs dinner each day while on multi day trips ( and maybe a goose for a change of diet for me ). These do really well out of a suppressed 24" Rem 700 PSS, no keyholes, at about 1050-1080 fps. Dec 2014 Location canterbury Posts 4,042 308 subsonic trail boss projectiles and loads Im wanting to put together a subsonic load for my 308 using trail boss. Lapua SS runs around $3 a round, TTI was about half that (they still in business?), EBR Thumper about a buck a round, there are several others in the game. Stock/OEM subtonics seem to use VV powders, less than 10 grains (I bought and disassembled a few) as far as I can tell, but, as they're proprietary, the mfr.'s not going to tell you what powder they use. Some argue for bulky powders, others for FAST powders so as not to cause detonation when what you want is just a quick pressure spike. Load I decided on is a 180 grain Sierra RN, 2.700" OAL, Win Standard primers and 8.2 grains of BULLSEYE. Thanks normbal.ĭo some googling on this one, it's been beaten to death, especially in Finland of all places where buying a suppressor is cash and carry. I have found that using Bullseye for cast 44 mag subsonic resulted in leading in the bore. You need to know the range to the target very well in order to ensure correct shot placement.Įdited to add I forgot about using Bulleye. With a 200 yard zero, you will still be at least a foot high at 100 yards. Past 200 yards a subsonic bullet is moving downhill very quickly. It has been my experience that you can expect your groups to average 1.5 to 2 times larger with subsonic ammo in a gun intended for supersonic ammo. Magnum primers give more consistent ignition and lower standard deviations. 1-10 is good for round noise 220 grain bullets, but they will keyhole with a 1-12 twist. Start with about 15 grains in a 308 case and a 220 grain bullet.Įnsure your twist is right. H110, V110, 4227 and any other magnum pistol powder is good for subsonic rifle loads. I use WC820, it is like H110 and entirely safe to use in reduced loads in rifles. Lowers speeds give less power, higher trajectories and the potential for increased yawing which can be hazardous to your silencer if you are using one. Faster than 1100 fps and you risk a sonic boom especially in colder temperatures. First, no matter what data you use, you will need a chronograph. ![]()
